These days recruitment can be a risky venture. It seems everyone in the recruitment channel has ulterior motives. You start to get paranoid and the end result is you don't get any recruits at all! And to make matters much better, those epic neckbeard Goonies lurk there. Now we all know Goons don't recruit except from their "Something Awful" forums. Any in-game recruitment drive on their part can safely be assumed to be a scam. Like pretty much any interaction with Goons. But these days, since the new bounty mechanics have been added to the game, they sit there and add bounties to people who are recruiting. Then if you say anything, you get PC'd by one of their alts and passive aggressive threatened. Wow, Goons must be REALLY bored. If I was in Goons, I think I would find better things to do with my time. You'd think you would be busy enjoying the massive empire they have built, right? But no, they'd rather grief and scam. This is why they are bad for EVE.
But this is besides the point. How can you be sure you are recruiting a real recruit and not a griefer, a scammer, a spy, or a thief?
There are a few things to watch out for. How many corporations have they been in? Have they been in a lot of corporations, usually just for a day or two? They are likely a griefer who joins a group and then shoots his fellow corpmates. One tactic is to refuse to dock so they can't be kicked from the corp and try to extort money. If you do your background checks and talk to their former corpmates the truth will come out. Never fail to do this.

If you are recruiting, have a procedure. What we do is we ask them not to apply right away. First we get them in our public channel and we talk about where they are going in EVE and what they are looking for. Ask a lot of questions. Communicate. If things seem at all hinky, just ban them from the public channel. It is not worth the grief to recruit someone who is not straight with you. Get them on voice comms. There is a lot to be learned from listening to someone's voice. Ask for a full API. And again, do your background checks.
Nothing is for sure in EVE, and a lot of people will grief you just because they think they can. If you are not an asshole yourself, you may be able to beat this just by being a decent guy in a decent corp. Once people get to know us, they usually get to like us because we are likeable people. Who and what you are may be your final line of defense against a corp griefer.
Good luck out there.
